After reading the first issue of this new story arc, I am happy to say that Shea Fontana has filled the shoes of Greg Rucka left behind. However, she still has quite a long way to go before to have a story that can compare to the first stories of Rebirth. However, with what this new story is promising, I can't wait to read more.

Last issue, we saw Diana suffer a loss on a mission but pushed people away as she did not wish to share the burden. Etta Candy, Diana's best friend, decides to remedy this by having Diana join her for a family wedding. Everything looks like it's going great, but when she is assisting Etta's niece in finding her shoe, she found a very EXPLOSIVE wedding gift. I'm certain the bride and groom will be BLOWN AWAY by it... It's a bomb if the puns weren't clear.

Will Diana save the wedding? Let's find out!

*WARNING! SOME SPOILERS BELOW!*

I can't say this is a terrible issue, but it is a HUGE step down from the first one. In a way, I can describe this issue as a balance of quality: For every good thing, there is a bad one.

In the opening, we have Diana cover herself over the bomb to protect the wedding. She blocks most of it, having her stand up, suit torn apart to reveal her outfit underneath, looking pissed off. It's an amazing scene drawn by Mirka. However, this is where the first question I had with this issue: How powerful was that bomb? I'm not saying that bombs aren't powerful, but if it's being blocked by a practically invulnerable Amazon, should the devastation be much less? After the amazing shot of Wonder Woman, we see that the bomb basically had enough fire power to cause the entire building to be falling apart? Wounded people and destroyed tables I can see, but an entire building?

In the last review, I stated that it was made pretty clear who exactly the villain is... Sadly I was correct in my guess. I say sadly because the reveal of Dr. Crawford's villainy would have been so much better if it wasn't blatant. Imagine if, over the course of the issues, we had Crawford take care of Diana on her mission to discover who attacked the wedding, having her work quietly in the background, giving subtle hints of what goes through her head, waiting till the penultimate issue of the story to reveal her true intent. Basically, Crawford wanted Diana's blood so she could attempt to cure the disease she's afflicted with. The disease will not only affect her strength but her mind as well; Aspects that the Amazons pride themselves on. This would have been so much better if it was expanded throughout the storyline, but instead, it ends before making a big impact.

When Crawford does use the blood, it basically gives her the strength and body of an Amazon. Diana throws down with her, eventually using the lasso of truth to "break the lie" within Crawford's DNA to turn her back to normal. Again, this is an example of an interesting idea only to be followed by a bad one. What does the blood of an Amazon do to human beings? Could it become a steroid that rivals Venom, Bane's drug? Obviously, there are side effects, but imagine if someone like Veronica Cale, the villain of the previous arc, were to see this and weaponize it. That would make one fascinating tale. The problem with it is that it also has an Achilles Heel, in the form of the lasso. I know that this is supposed to reveal truths, but something just doesnt make sense to when it comes to breaking Crawford's DNA. She didn't say that it was all her DNA, so she was telling the truth. Why would the Lasso break something that was the truth? I might be reading far to into it, but it's been bugging me.

Overall, I was a bit disappointed with this issue, but it honestly could have been worse. Fontana created some neat ideas, as well as bad ones. Will they come back to bite the story on its rear in the coming issues? Only one way to find out.

5/10
